Sorti en salles chez nous et en France début 2008, après un passage télévisé sur FRANCE3 quelques mois plus tôt et des prix dans divers festivals, ce documentaire et premier film de l’actrice française SANDRINE BONNAIRE a suscité vives polémiques et émotions.
Emotions car l’actrice délivre un témoignage personnel et poignant sur la dégradation mentale et physique de sa sœur Sabine, au cours des 20 dernières années, sœur qu’elle a suivi, filmé, vu devenir violente, ingérable pour la famille, famille qui, finalement du se décider à la « placer » dans diverses institutions psychiatriques. Sabine fut diagnostiquée autiste.
Polémiques, car Sandrine Bonnaire dépeint un tableau de la psychiatrie française peu flatteur même si dans ses interviews elle se défend d’avoir fait un film « à charge » de ce milieu mais plutôt d’avoir voulu soulever des questions cruciales sur ces patients dont il semblerait que « personne ne sait exactement quoi faire d’eux». Particulièrement quand ils sont comme Sabine, adultes…
N’ayant pas ENCORE vu le film, je ne peux juger du regard de sa réalisatrice sur les soins prodigués à sa sœur, et reste juste là, à travers mes lectures, à me poser des questions. De quoi souffre réellement Sabine ? De psychose ? de handicap mental ? (son aptitude à apprendre notamment le piano m’en fait douter), d’autisme ? Le diagnostic a-t-il été bien posé et les orientations thérapeutiques ont-elles été bien définies ou envisagées ? Quelle est la situation de la psychiatrie en France ? Et en Belgique ?
Au-delà du fait que la réalisatrice est une actrice connue et reconnue, ce documentaire est certainement à découvrir…

After having been broadcasted on french TV channel FRANCE3, and been awarded in several festivals, “HER NAME IS SABINE”, the first documentary film directed by french actress SANDRINE BONNAIRE open in Belgium and France in early 2008 arousing polemics and emotions.
Emotions because Sandrine Bonnaire’s film is a personal and touching testimony of the mental and physical decline of her sister Sabine, that she has been filming during the last twenty years, a sister who she saw becoming violent, out of control, and who finally was committed to mental institutions by her desperate family. Sabine was finally diagnosed as suffering of an “autistic disorder”.
Polemics because Sandrine Bonnaire presents a picture of french psychiatry which is not flattering, even if she denys in her interviews she wanted to make a film “on prosecution” (vocab?) against psychiatric institutions but that she rather wanted to raise questions about how to care about those patients that “nobody really knows how to deal with” . Particularly when they become, adults, like Sabine.
As I’ve not yet seen the film, I can’t make up an honest opinion, but through my researches in the media, numerous clips, the film has already raised in me some questions… What is really Sabine suffering from ? Psychosis ? Mental handicap (her piano skills contradicts that), a form of autism ? Was a real diagnosis really made ? Were all the therapeutic options envisioned ? What’s the situation of the mental health sector in France ? and in Belgium ?
Beyond the fact that Sandrine Bonnaire is a very known and recognized actress, this documentary is for sure worth to watch.
